5 Kernels of Corn
The Pilgrims came across the sea
To found a colony
Where they could worship God and teach
Their children openly.
The first long winter on these shores
Would test them to the core –
Disease and hunger, cold and death
Took half of them or more.
Their daily ration was reduced
To five small grains of corn,
Just five for each to keep alive
And face each icy morn.
At last the spring brought food and health
To those who made it through –
God blessed their harvest and they had
Enough and extra too.
They set aside a time to thank
The Lord for all His grace,
For all His gifts, and most of all
His presence in that place.
They took five kernels of new corn
From their abundant store
And let them stand for five good gifts
That they were thankful for.
It helped recall God’s faithfulness
In times of deep distress,
And helped them see how much they had
In joyful thankfulness.
