To try to know the love of God
So deep and high and broad
Is worth a life, and when you’re done
You’ll hardly have begun.
It’s kind of like a little ant
Inside a sugar plant
Who’s told that he can try to eat
Whatever there is sweet.
Or like a little fish turned free
Within the deepest sea
Who’s told to drink all that he can.
Who’d know if he began?
So is the love of Christ – a sea
So deep, so vast, so free.
We’ll never plunge its depths, but Oh!
How sweet is all we know!
